Susan Hertzberg
President and Chief Executive Officer
Ms. Hertzberg has extensive laboratory medicine and diagnostics experience. Prior to joining Boston Heart Lab, Ms. Hertzberg was President and CEO of Ipsogen Inc., a molecular oncology products and services business focused on blood and breast cancers.
Susan spent much of her career at Quest Diagnostics, the nation's leading provider of laboratory services, where she held executive positions in Purchasing and Materials Management, Sales, Marketing and Payor Contracting. She has also worked in Diagnostics, at Abbott Labs and in Managed Care for Oxford Health Plans.
Susan holds a B.A. degree in psychology from Clemson University and a M.B.A. from Columbia University. She serves on the Board of Theracare, a private special educational services business.
Ernst J. Schaefer, MD
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Schaefer is Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Boston Heart Lab. He and Dr. Asztalos (see below) have developed our company’s proprietary technology to measure HDL particles and developed the revolutionary new method to use HDL particle concentrations as a much more effective predictor for cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Dr. Schaefer is a distinguished professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University.
He received the J.D. Lane Award of the U.S. Public Health Service (1981) and the Irvine H. Page Arteriosclerosis Research Award from the American Heart Association (1981) for defining the metabolic defect in Tangier disease and describing two new genetic disorders apoA-I/C-III/A-IV and apoE deficiency characterized by severe lipoprotein abnormalities and premature heart disease. Further Dr. Schaefer received the Saul Horowitz Research Award from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine (1989), Oliver Smith Awards of Tufts-New England Medical Center for Patient Care (1999, 2001, 2003), the E.V. McCollum Research Award of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition (2000), and a Distinguished Faculty Award from Tufts University (2001). Since 1997 he has been a member of Who’s Who in America, and in 2004 was named among America’s Top Physicians by the Consumers Research Council of America.
Dr. Schaefer is an author or co-author of over 400 publications and served on the first and second adult treatment panels of the National Cholesterol Education Program of the National Institutes of Health, on the Nutrition Study Section and as chairman of the Metabolism Study Section of the NIH, and the Nutrition Committee of the American Heart Association. Since 1997 Dr. Schaefer has been the U.S. editor of the journal Atherosclerosis, the official journal of the European Atherosclerosis Society, and also serves on the Clinical Research Review Committee and Study Section of the NIH.
Bela F. Asztalos, Ph.D
Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Asztalos is the Chief Scientific Officer of Boston Heart Lab and an inventor of the two-dimensional gel electrophoresis lipoprotein technology. Dr. Asztalos received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Attila Jozsef University in Szeged, Hungary.
Kim Bracuti
Vice President, Finance
Kim Bracuti has over 20 years of accounting, finance and healthcare experience. She brings deep knowledge of the personalized diagnostics and laboratory services businesses. Kim spent most of her career at Quest Diagnostics where she held numerous management positions in finance and marketing. Most recently, Kim was the Controller at Ipsogen Inc., a personalized molecular diagnostics products and services company. As a finance leader, Kim has developed controls, tools and processes to support profitable growth.
Kim holds a BSM with a concentration in Accounting from The A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University.
Ruthi Breazeale
Vice President, Operations
Ruthi Breazeale has over 30 years of clinical laboratory experience in operations excellence, quality management, and regulatory compliance. Prior to joining Boston Heart Diagnostics, Ruthi held several national leadership roles at Quest Diagnostics, driving technical standardization and process control in Clinical Chemistry as well as directing the corporate quality management program for clinical pathology. As an operations leader, she drives a culture of continuous improvement in quality, productivity, and the reduction of operating expenses while optimizing service levels.
Ruthi holds a MMSc degree from Emory University, Atlanta, GA, a BS degree in Clinical Microbiology from the University of Georgia, Athens, and is MT(ASCP) certified.
Frank B Yunes, Esq.
Counsel
Mr. Yunes is Counsel and Secretary of Boston Heart Lab. His legal practice focuses in the areas of estate planning, estate administration and corporations. Before embarking on his own private practice, Mr. Yunes served as an Associate with G.W. & Wade, Inc. in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where his practice concentrated on tax, financial and estate planning matters. During his tenure with G.W. & Wade, Mr. Yunes earned certification as a NASD Registered Securities Representative and Investment Adviser Representative (Series 7 & 66). A member in good standing of the Massachusetts Bar, Mr. Yunes earned his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School in Boston, Massachusetts and Bachelor of Arts from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. He is a member of the Boston Bar Association, the BBA's Estate Planning Committee and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA).
